The contemporary fiber resin and aluminum sculpture 00080 features a head in profile completely covered with an aluminum foil mosaic: a surface of small rectangular tesserae hand-applied over the entire form. The head is seen in a three-quarter profile, with the face partially visible as it turns to the right; the nose, lips, and the curve of the skull are present, yet softened by the mosaic that simultaneously reveals and transforms them. The silver foil evokes the warmth of gold in some areas and the coolness of steel in others, with variations in tone and reflectivity creating a surface that shifts continually with the light.
At certain points, small white circular rivets mark the seams between the mosaic sections, lending the work a quality of visible construction—both raw and elegant. Mandiola’s aluminum head sculptures belong to a series in which the human form is translated into an industrial surface language without losing its fundamental character as a portrait. The mosaic does not conceal the head; it reveals it through a different material logic.
This work possesses a remarkable visual presence, best appreciated from multiple angles and under varying light conditions. A unique, handmade piece by Chilean artist Luis Mandiola.
