High fired ceramic lizard – 00049
$2,800
Original high-fired ceramic and pigment lizard sculpture by Luis Mandiola. A unique contemporary art piece with organic shapes and textures, ideal for art lovers.
The wall sculpture “High-Fired Ceramic Lizard” (Lagarto de cerámica de alta cocción) features a white lizard in high relief set against a large, dark ceramic plate. The figure of the lizard, rendered with meticulous anatomical attention, is molded in clay, its curved tail extending across the lower part of the plate in a fluid arc. The contrast between the white of the animal and the high-quality dark ceramic background lends the work a striking visual clarity, at once decorative and symbolic.
Mandiola approaches the figure of the lizard as both a specific creature and a universal symbol: a form present in ceramic traditions ranging from pre-Columbian cultures to contemporary artistic practice, evoking the earth, resilience, and the boundary between the organic and the mineral. The dark surface of the plate possesses the quality of a worked field: non-uniform, but varied, alive with the traces of the firing process and the accumulated decisions of the artisan.
This work possesses a commanding physical presence: large in scale, with a powerful image and precise execution. The lizard as a motif carries a long cultural resonance in Chilean and Latin American art. A unique piece, handmade by the Chilean artist Luis Mandiola.
