High temperature fired ceramic – 00062
$500
High-fired ceramic works by Chilean artist Luis Mandiola Uribe, exploring sculptural form, texture, and rich surface effects in fired clay.
High-fired ceramic 00062 is a piece where the interaction of fire, glaze, and clay creates an image that is functional in form and pictorial in texture. The bottle, with its rounded base and narrow neck, features a glaze that ranges from intense crimson and wine red at the top to a dark graphite gray at the base. This gradient is not applied but achieved naturally: it is the result of temperature, chemistry, and the controlled chance of the kiln.
Horizontal wheel-thrown lines furrow the body of the vessel from the base to the neck, giving the surface a rhythmic texture that traverses both color zones. On one side, a small organic form in relief—a figure—is applied to the surface, introducing a subtle figurative note within an abstract composition of color and texture. This work connects Mandiola’s ceramic practice with a long tradition of vessel-making in which the fired surface constitutes the primary image.
The vessel, as a form, evokes associations with the body, containment, and the transformation of raw material through fire—recurring themes throughout Mandiola’s ceramic oeuvre. A unique work, handmade by Chilean artist Luis Mandiola Uribe.
